Dimitris
Kourzakis

Classical guitarist

Dimitris maintains a diverse artistic profile, performing internationally as a soloist and with Angelos Botsis, while also leading and shaping music festivals and institutions through his work in artistic direction and management.

Classical guitarist, educator, and arts administrator Dimitris Kourzakis (MusMPerf, PGDipPerf – University of Manchester), born in the Netherlands and based in Athens, Greece, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester as a scholar of the Lilian Voudouri Foundation, under Gordon Crosskey and visiting tutor John Williams, following earlier studies at the Nikos Skalkottas Conservatory in Athens with Costas Grigoreas.

He has appeared as a soloist in major venues such as the Megaron Athens Concert Hall and has collaborated with ensembles including the Athens Sinfonietta and the Athens Chamber Opera Orchestra. His performances have been broadcast on NET Television and the Third Programme of Greek Radio, and he has recorded works by leading Greek contemporary composer Michail Travlos for a CD release by TAR e-magazine.

Together with guitarist Angelos Botsis, he co-founded the D&A GuitarDuo during their postgraduate studies in Manchester. Since then, their appearances in major concert halls and international festivals, along with consistently strong critical reception, have established them as one of Greece’s leading guitar duos. Their repertoire includes original works written for them—such as Michail Travlos’s Paradox Suite, premiered live on the Third Programme of Greek Radio—as well as their own transcriptions of orchestral repertoire. Among these are William Walton’s Varii Capricci, included in the composer’s official catalogue of works (Stewart R. Craggs, William Walton: A Catalogue, Oxford University Press, 2015), and the Introduction from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, first performed by the duo at the Antwerp Guitar Festival in 2018.

Recent world premiere recordings include a CD released by the Polish label Small Great Music, featuring works by Konstantin Vassiliev and Mauro Godoy Villalobos, as well as a Siccas Guitars video recording of a work by Michael Knopf—both presenting prize-winning compositions from the Veria International Guitar Festival Composition Competition.

Alongside his performance career, he is active in cultural management. Since 2015, he has served as Artistic Director of the Veria International Guitar Festival—one of the most prominent in the European guitar scene—organized by the KEPA of the Municipality of Veria at the Arts Centre, where he also introduced Greece’s only Guitar Concerto Competition with symphony orchestra. He is also a consultant for the MuSifanto Classical Music Festival on the island of Sifnos, including its associated guitar workshops across the Aegean, and is responsible for the classical guitar department of the Music Workshops held on remote Aegean islands. He is the founder and former director of the Mini Guitar Festival, a leading educational platform for young guitarists in Greece, held annually in Agios Stefanos from 2002 to 2010.

He is the Director of the Neoklassiko Conservatory of Gerakas and the Klassiko Conservatory of Holargos in Athens.
